Parent group joins learning network
A charity that helps people become better parents is being welcomed into learndirect scotland’s national network of learning centres.
Parent Network Scotland, based in Edinburgh, runs courses throughout the country for people from all walks of life. The good parenting courses help families facing issues such as bullying, drug problems, anti-social behaviour, fostering and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
In recognition of the organisation’s commitment to achieving the high standards required to become a branded learning centre, learndirect scotland manager Denise Horn, will present a commemorative plaque on Wednesday 26th July 2006.
Courses are run in small, friendly groups which are supported by a parent facilitator. Some parents who have attended the courses have gone on to become facilitators, or taken courses in counselling or psychotherapy.
Parent Network Scotland has close links with England’s Parentline Plus and its clients include local authority education departments, children and young people’s charities, single parent groups and the National Health Service.
Support worker Alison Thomson said: “Our learners are a diverse group. Basically it can be anyone who is looking for help with raising children. Our main offices are in Edinburgh but we have facilitators who train all over the country."
Since 2004, more than 550 learners have completed courses with Parent Network Scotland.
Currently, 30 learners are doing courses on subjects such as parenting matters, coping with teenage issues, helping children learn, talking about drugs and supporting children through change and loss. Once they have finished their courses, learners can continue to meet as a support group.
