Housing award for learning centre vice-chair
David Cowan, vice chair of North Glasgow Housing Association – a learndirect scotland brandled learning centre – is the winner of this year’s The Scottish Housing Committee Member 2005 Award.
The announcement was made at the Employers in Voluntary Housing’s annual conference.
David joined North Glasgow Housing Association, Springburn, Glasgow, in 1998.
David believes the association should give more than just good housing to the communities it serves as a result of strong links between housing, health and education. Under his leadership, a “wider action” programme has been developed. As a result, the association was the first in the country to gain learndirect scotland branded status. This was a milestone for North Glasgow Housing Association and an excellent example to others in the movement who believe that sustainable communities need more than a safe, warm and affordable quality housing and related services.
David was instrumental in establishing an internet café for youngsters in Possilpark, employing two new members of staff as part of the Modern Apprentice framework, Launching an anti-graffiti initiative and introducing an internet programme for elderly residents.
David is pictured receiving his award from TV and Radio celebrity, Angus Simpson.
