Glasgow Homeless GIAG

People at Give it a Go at the Wayside

The first learndirect scotland Give It A Go! event to target the homeless community took place at The Wayside, a drop-in centre in central Glasgow.

Those attending had the opportunity to try out cookery, find out about the internet, learn basic photography and discover the range of learning opportunities available to them. Help with reading and writing was offered, along with free food and refreshments.

Many of those who went along had heard about the event from ‘learning champions’ who had been recruited to talk to people and tell them what Give It A Go! was all about, give out leaflets and generally encourage others to turn up.

Around 60 homeless people and hostel dwellers attended the event to find out what was on offer.

learndirect scotland worked in close partnership with the Glasgow Homelessness Network and The Wayside to ensure the day was a success.

Other organisations involved included Blue Triangle Housing Association, the Simon Community and the Gorbals Healthy Living Centre.

Sister Marie O’Dea, project leader at The Wayside, said: ““The feedback from the service users has also been positive and the free food was very much appreciated. We are hoping that some service users will follow up on some of the activities and staff will be encouraging them.”
